FUNCTION: Stabilization of the spine, extension, lateral flexion (side bending) and rotation of the back. Unilateral (one-sided) contraction of the erector spinae group causes the same flexion (ipsilateral) or rotate, while bilateral contraction extends a portion of the spine.
